Logan mayor to request face mask mandate

Recent polling by the Hinckley Institute of Politics indicates that 61 percent of Utahns are not opposed to mask mandate imposed by either state or local officials.

LOGAN – Mandatory face masks could be coming to Logan, if a proposed request by Mayor Holly Daines is approved by Gov. Gary Herbert.

At a Logan City Council meeting Tuesday, Daines solicited the council members’ reaction to the idea of requesting the state’s permission to impose a mask mandate in Logan.

After consulting with officials at Utah State University and the Logan City School District, Daines said that she came to the conclusion that Logan should adopt a mandate so that “mask-wearing policies would be the same everywhere” within city limits.

Under current state coronavirus guidelines, students and teachers in K through 12 public schools will wear masks when classes finally resume in August. Utah State has adopted a similar policy, as have several major retailers throughout Cache Valley, including Walmart, Sam’s Club, Smith’s Marketplace, Smith’s, Lee’s Marketplace, Macey’s and others.

Citing public health concerns, the members of the city council were generally supportive of the mayor’s proposal. Council member Jeanne Simmonds emphasized that the mask mandate should especially apply to passengers on Cache Valley Transit District buses.

Daines said she planned to send her request for permission to impose the mask mandate through the Bear River Health Department to Gov. Herbert by Thursday.

While Herbert has been reluctant to impose a statewide mask mandate, he has previously approved similar voluntary requests from city and county officials.

In general terms, the city’s mandate would require masks to be worn indoors in public places whenever contact with other individuals was likely and outdoors whenever social distancing cannot be maintained.

If the mayor’s request is approved, Daines said that the city has no plans to punitively enforce the mandate.

“We’re certainly not going to put anyone in jail for not wearing a mask,” she added. “In other places where masks are mandatory, officials are focusing on education about the benefits of mask-wearing, rather than enforcement.”

Personally, I enjoy going to the rodeos. I imagine all you peta loving liberals will still be demanding wearing masks when the next cold season arrives.

Hopefully, Mayor Daines will get permission before the Cache County Fair and Rodeo. My goodness, what is the County Council thinking holding the rodeo? At least the carnival is cancelled but live music, rodeo, crowds without masks? Suppose that it’s being held outdoors is a positive note.

The odds are in my favor of living.
They told us that most of us would get it eventually.
They told us to flatten the curve. Now they are telling us that most of us are going to get it but we need to wear masks and cancel everything.
The story changes but the truth is that “most of us are going to get it sometime and that most of us are going to live”
I choose to live and enjoy life carefully.
If I am the one who gets this and dies, I will not have missed life hiding in the basement.
    I will go out living!

By the way I am over 60, have lung problems and other health concerns. I am the high risk person but, I will and want to live life carefully. I never said anything about never wearing a mask I do when/as needed. But – I am out there living and enjoying life. I am one of the ones still working so others can “choose” to work, stay home, or shame others.

Wearing a mask does not equate to hiding in your basement and not living your life. If you are the one who gets this and dies, you could have worn a mask and survived long enough to receive a vaccine. And if you get this and spread it to someone else, you could have worn a mask and not spread it so they could survive long enough to receive a vaccine.

That was the most selfish piece of garbage I’ve read. Masks aren’t solely about protecting you and preserving your life. Elderly people, people with cancer, children with cancer have the right to live and fight against their ailments without the addition of Covid19 that your asymptomatic self would give them.

Any defender of not wearing a mask is perhaps the most selfish citizen one could imagine. I guess he/she has the freedom to drive 80mph through a school zone, smoke in public places where it is prohibited, talk on a cell phone while driving, or not obeying a city curfew if one were mandated? Some behaviors must be controlled for the greater good.

‘must be controlled’ is what this is really about. Living in a free society means we all must make sacrifices, not for safety and security, but for freedom. I could just as easily say ‘Any defender of a mask mandate is the most selfish citizen one could imagine. Forcing others to adhere to your own standard of fear and safety, outside of law and freedom is destroying this great nation far more than Coronavirus’. Forcing an entire citizenry to follow the will of a few without the ‘consent of the governed’ is, quite frankly, tyranny. William Pitt said, “Necessity is the plea for every infringement of human freedom. It is the argument of tyrants; it is the creed of slaves.” May we not fall so easily into the trap of controlling others, but instead look inside to improve ourselves and prove to be a light for others to follow.

Hurrah for Mayor Daines. I endorse the recommendations from our trusted local medical advisors (Dr. Redd, Dr. Dunn, etc), and from religious leaders. If nothing more, it’s a statement of courtesy and respect for those with co-morbidities.

I prefer dangerous freedom over peaceful slavery. Masks have killed people from lack of oxygen. I will not wear a mask. I refuse! Anyone who believes the media or government is completely brainwashed and your mask is killing your brain cells further. I believe three people have died in and around Logan from the coronavirus. Are we really continuously shutting everything down and wearing masks and social distancing the crap out of everything because three people died?! How many people’s livelihoods have died?! How brainwashed and brain dead does someone need to be to buy this?!

Anybody who thinks that the LDS area presidency told us to wear masks because of inspiration is wrong. They were told by the government to tell us to wear masks. If you are LDS, We are to follow the law which is the constitutional law of the land. According to D&C 98 anything more or less than this cometh of evil and I believe a mask wearing mandate is more than the constitution. It cometh of evil Miss Mayor. And I will not go along with evil.

Do you guys all think the Mark of the beast will be handed out labeled as the Mark of the beast? Or do you think the government and media will sell it to us as something that’s for our own good? Think about it.

      Wow,
I would love to have a couple of hits of the stuff you are taking. Please tell me where the people died wearing mask? Meadow mountain, maybe? I hate wearing a mask and I have asthma. I still wear one, because I realize that it helps prevent me from giving it to other people. If I have the coronavirus. Of course we all knoW that it is a hoax right. That it is going to disappear on November 5th, that it might simply just go away one day. God help us all. I wish I could watch a bull ride you for eight seconds.

  • Jeenacnilson July 22, 2020 at 9:09 pm Reply

If your mask works then you don’t need me to wear one! Calling people selfish because they wish to breathe instead of suffocate is where the selfish lunacy lies. That “grown people” have to be told that breathing is a great idea (and “reeducation” that includes convincing people that breathing their own CO2 and toxins is as healthy as fresh air instead of actually akin to drinking their own urine!) is astounding. The proverbial Emperor IS NAKED! If you are sick enough to need a mask then you can choose to stay home. I am not sick AND the twisted folks who need me to pretend to their game need to be evaluated for Munchausen’s!!!

  • Max July 22, 2020 at 11:38 pm Reply

Defining those who choose not to wear a mask as “selfish” is not any sort of legitimate argument in favor of masks. It is only an insult which includes significant premises. If mask wearing is to be broadly implemented, there needs to be some sort of specific criteria on which it is based. “Seems like a good idea” and “people are scared” are not sufficient justifications. As of now, I have yet to hear a good reason for it. Some claim that it prevents transmission through water droplets. That’s also called not sneezing or coughing on other people. In fact, the scientific and statistical evidence on the effectiveness of masks is mixed up to this point, as I understand it. We’ve got to have clearly defined, logical thinking backing up regulations.

  • SirBamBam July 23, 2020 at 11:42 pm Reply

Calling someone selfish for not wearing a mask might not be helpful, but it is true. As a society and legal system, we are always trying to balance personal freedoms against public good. You don’t get to disregard speed limits because what YOU do behind the wheel impacts SOMEONE ELSE. Same with a mask. Your choice impacts someone else, unfortunately sometimes more than one person, in the case of Covid. I agree it sucks but that’s the nature of a novel virus. Here’s another thing—anti-mask wearers claim they don’t have Covid so people shouldn’t worry about them and mind their own business. Everyone knows this by now but you’re contagious before you show symptoms. So you’re asking the public to trust you, a stranger, so we can feel safe doing routine things like grocery shopping, mail pickup, etc. We shouldn’t base our society’s health on trusting strangers to somehow know they have a highly contagious virus before they even have symptoms. So yes it is selfish to not wear a mask. It’s saying that you the individual get to decide the risk profile for everyone else around you. Just because you’re cool with dying having “not lived in your basement” doesn’t mean you should get to make that same choice for your neighbors.

    • Vaughn A Griffiths July 27, 2020 at 9:03 am Reply

Your logic and reasoning is straight forward, easy to understand and well put. I totally agree.
In spite of the discomfort I experience wearing a mask, I realize that those individuals wearing one, communicate that they, not only care about their own safety, but also the safety of others. It’s a small temporary, common sense “price to pay” to do my part for the safety of our community. To those that exercise their freedom by not wearing a face mask, I would ask you to ponder for a moment, not just the increased risk you put yourselves or the strangers you meet, but also the real risk you present the loved ones you come home too. . . Wearing a face mask is the act of a thoughtful person. Let’s not lose sight of the fact that it’s this crazy invisible virus COVID 19 that’s the enemy, threatening us, and killing our neighbors.

  • Tjo7179 July 23, 2020 at 11:49 pm Reply

All of you anti-maskers are kidding yourselves. You know how respiratory illnesses work. Wearing masks is not killing people from lack of oxygen. If it’s too tight, get one that isn’t. Freedom isn’t about the right to do whatever the hell you want! Can you smoke in a store? NO, because it affects the health of other people. Can you legally drive drunk? NO, because it affects the safety of other people. The fact that some of you need “proof” that a mask will prevent COVID is RIDICULOUS! No one is saying it will prevent it, but doing all of the safety practices will help. There are people that are comparing this to the way the Nazi’s treated Jews. That is probably the most sad and disrespectful thing I have ever heard in my life! This is about HEALTH, not politics. Pull your heads out and think about other people. Utah has such a high number of conservative LDS people who are obviously the furthest thing from being Christian I could ever imagine. Pathetic.

    • One who knows July 24, 2020 at 8:44 am Reply

No.. its ALL about politics, that is the problem.. If it was truly about public health and a deadly virus you wouldn’t have for force people to wear a mask. Media instilling fear, inconstant reporting of numbers and politics is the reason there is so much fight on this

  • Max July 24, 2020 at 9:46 am Reply

It is NOT true that those who don’t wear masks are selfish. In fact, to a certain degree, it is the other way around. The selfishness lies in those who expect to impose their own opinions on everybody else with no reasonable evidence. You have the freedom to implement whatever precautions you like in your own life, but not in that of others. People continue to use the driving analogy, so let me use that as well. There is always risk getting on the road, but you have that choice. People are capable of assuming personal responsibility and anyone who is not willing to accept that can stay off the road or drive a little slower. Driving 80 through a school zone is the equivalent of deliberately putting yourself in a position to spread coronavirus when you know you have it. It is not the equivalent of going into a store with no mask and no symptoms. Claiming that someone must do what you say because they are putting your life at risk is a foolish notion.

Ok, so using your analogy: If you don’t want to wear a mask – then stay home. If you don’t like that a store is requiring masks, then don’t go to that store.

For those of you that wear a mask I get it your scared and everything you do hinges on what the news fills your head with. My question is since your scared then why don’t you stay inside your home locked away ? Why don’t you shop online and have home delivery ? Because your scared why does my life have to change drastically ? How long will you wear your worthless masks ? Are you going to rush out and get vaccinated when they come out with a vaccine that has virtually no testing behind it? And once your vaccinated are you going to continue to wear your mask or wait until your told you can take it off ? And once you get this experimental vaccine you should be protected from people like me who refuses to wear a mask or take there experimental vaccine ? If your so safe then why do you feel a need to force your beliefs on to people like me ? We are not telling you to take your mask off. But I am saying if your so scared stay home lock yourselves away from people like me then you can live your happy little lives out and won’t feel the need to bother others. Oh also everyone dies you can’t live forever so if its not this that kills you it will be something else.

I get that you don’t trust the news but saying that there is virtually no testing behind the vaccine is untrue. Yes politicians lie. Yes the news outlets do things to attract viewers. But why would doctors and scientists who dedicate their lives to saving others lie? Why do they insist on you wearing a mask?

  • Sad neighbor July 26, 2020 at 5:39 pm Reply

Max, where are you getting your information? Masks have been shown scientifically to prevent the spread of respiratory disease. It works by preventing you (and everyone else) from spreading saliva droplets into the air. This is why doctors wear them. No doctors have died from suffocation from lack of oxygen so far. Many people who have the coronavirus won’t have symptoms at all and will unknowingly kill others.
