Since late-March 2020, when Utah’s first COVID death was reported, 4,344 Utahns have died from the coronavirus. The Utah Department of Health (UDOH) reported eight more deaths Thursday, two of which occurred prior to Jan. 17.

Recently, the state’s daily reports of positive cases have been trending downward and Thursday — with 1,032 new cases — is the eighth straight day under 2,000. That helped to drive the seven-day average for positive tests to 1,164 a day.

This latest report shows Utah with 917,223 positive cases over the 23 months of the pandemic.

The Bear River Health Department (BRHD) reported 43 new COVID cases in northern Utah since Wednesday and the district’s total case count grew to 51,000. Total hospitalizations in the district have reached 1,958. Coronavirus has claimed the lives of 222 people in Cache, Box Elder and Rich counties.

The latest BRHD numbers indicate 58 percent of all district residents are fully vaccinated and 70 percent of the district’s population have received at least one dose. More than 243,000 vaccine doses have been administered in the district.

Statewide, COVID hospitalizations are down to 476 , 22 fewer than were reported Wednesday and 110 of those patients are in intensive care units, seven fewer than Wednesday. To date nearly 33,000 Utahns have been hospitalized with the virus.

Almost 4.9 million Utahns have been tested for coronavirus and more than 9.1 million tests have been administered in the state since the start of the pandemic. There were 4,685 people tested since Wednesday and 11,135 total tests were administered during that time.

The number of fully vaccinated Utahns is 1.97 million, over 60 percent of the state’s population.

Utah’s rolling seven-day average for percent positivity of “people over people” is 27 percent while the percent positivity of “tests over tests” is 16.1 percent.

Idaho’s Thursday COVID update shows 4,634 people have lost their lives to the virus. The state’s total of confirmed COVID-19 cases is 409,129. Case counts in the three counties in southeast Idaho include 2,313 positive cases in Franklin County, 901 in Bear Lake County and 781 in Oneida County.
