GARDEN CITY — Everyone is invited to a public hearing on the State of Bear Lake this Thursday, March 31st at 6 p.m. at the Garden City Convention Center in Garden City, Utah.

On KVNU’s For the People program last week, Scott Tolentino, fisheries biologist at the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources(DWR) addressed the timing of the public hearing.

“I don’t think there’s anything with the timing of it. We just wanted to get it going before most of the people got into their busy summer season, including us, when we’re out sampling. We wanted to just bring the public in and present some information on the state of the fisheries on Bear Lake. We’re going to cover everything from the endemic species to the non-game species to, of course, the cutthroat and the lake trout, which are the big ones out there that everybody likes to fish for,” he explained.

Tolentino said that during the public meeting, they want to give a background on how the lake is doing and also talk about the future and the direction that both the Utah DWR and the Idaho Department of Fish and Game are planning for Bear Lake.

“We’re just going to give a presentation for about 45 minutes, talk about how we work together on just about everything out there. We have a fisheries management plan in place on the lake and we want to update that in the future,” he added. “We want the public to hear what’s going on and if they have any input, they’re welcome to give it to us, and we’ll go from there.”
