LOGAN — A 47-year-old Logan man is headed to prison for sexually abusing five young children over a long period of time. Fernando Carrillo asked a court for forgiveness as he was ordered to serve at least 15 years behind bars.

Carrillo was sentenced during a virtual hearing in 1st District Court Wednesday morning, appearing by web conference from the Cache County Jail. He previously pleaded guilty to one count of aggravated sexual abuse of a child, a first-degree felony; and four counts of sexual abuse of a child, amended to a second-degree felony.

Defense attorney Shannon Demler tried to portray his client as a hard worker, who had tried to support his family but made some big mistakes. He said Carrillo had been a “model inmate in jail” and could be a positive member of the community after receiving counselling and treatment.

Carrillo spoke briefly through an interpreter, asking for mercy. He told the court he would never do anything like he did again.

Cache County Deputy Attorney Dane Murray explained how Carrillo sexually abused and molested the five girls, who ranged in age from 7 to 14 at the time the crimes occurred. All of them described similar incidents occurring while he was babysitting them, at his Logan apartment near 1700 North 400 West.

The victims told police how Carrillo would inappropriately touch them repeatedly. He would bribe the girls by letting them play his computer and Xbox, and also “buy them things.” One also described being raped several times when she was around 9-years-old.

During Wednesday’s sentencing, Judge Brian Cannell expressed concern about the harm done to the children, hoping they would be able to heal and find the joy they deserved. He called Carrillo’s actions “heinous” and ordered him to serve the maximum sentence, 15-years-to-life in prison. The exact length of time will be determined by the Utah Board of Pardons and Parole.

Really! Mr.Demler! A pedophile can never be a positive member of any community!
I would like to see anyone convicted of these crimes get a life sentence in prison and never be paroled.
He has given these girls a life sentence of trama. I hope they are able to get the emotional help they need to help them heal.
Thank you, Judge Brian Cannell for giving him the sentence he deserves.
