4th woman accuses Logan man of rape

LOGAN — A fourth woman has now come forward, accusing a 23-year-old Logan man of raping her earlier this year. Spencer E. Dodd is already being held in the Cache County Jail without bail.

Dodd was arraigned in 1st District Court Friday morning, during a virtual hearing, appearing by web conference from jail. He was charged with rape, object rape, forcible sodomy, all first-degree felonies; and aggravated assault, a third-degree felony. The charges will be added to the 10 other felonies (two counts of rape, two counts of object rape, one count of forcible sodomy and five counts of forcible sexual abuse) he was previously charged with in the three other cases.

According to the latest investigation, the alleged victim contacted Logan City Police officers on April 14, describing how she had been sexually assaulted and raped by Dodd on January 14. The woman reported meeting the suspect on an online dating app. They agreed to meet and watch a movie at his residence.

During the date, Dodd allegedly began assaulting and raping her. He also placed his hand around her neck and covered her mouth. “She described almost losing consciousness on several occasions,” the arrest affidavit stated.

Police were able to trace data logs from Dodd’s smartphone, showing him at his residence during the time of the alleged incident. There was also evidence of electronic communications with the alleged victim prior to the assault.

In February, Dodd, who is originally from Spokane, Washington and moved to Logan to attend Utah State, was arrested after two women reported being raped during dates with him. The alleged victims each described similar situations where he refused to comply with the women’s lack of consent but later apologized for acting anyway. He was later released from jail on pretrial supervision.

Two weeks later, Dodd was arrested again after a third woman contacted police, alleging that she was also raped by the defendant, while on a date in September 2020. She had reportedly met him on a dating app geared toward members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. They arranged to meet at a house near USU’s campus, where the assault took place.

In March, Dodd was bound over for trial on the first three cases after he waived his rights to a preliminary hearing. His defense attorney explained that negotiations on a possible plea deal were already underway but all of the details had not been worked out yet.

During Friday’s video arraignment, Dodd was ordered to remain in jail and appear again in court April 27. He could face up to life in prison, if convicted.

Individuals arrested and charged in complaints are presumed innocent unless or until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in court.
