LOGAN — A 59-year-old former Logan woman currently in prison for sexually abusing several boys years ago has pleaded guilty to a similar crime involving another victim at the same time. Carol A. Ricker accepted a plea deal and was immediately sentenced to more time behind bars.

Ricker participated in a virtual hearing in 1st District Court Wednesday morning, appearing by web conference from prison. She pleaded guilty to an amended charge of attempted rape of a child, a first-degree felony.

According to prosecutors, Ricker molested the boy both over and under his clothing. Later she and Steven Al Archuleta would engage in sexual acts while making the boy interact with them.

Ricker was originally convicted of two counts of attempted rape of a child in 2010 and is currently serving two consecutive terms of three-years-to-life in prison. She spoke to police last summer admitting to the crime.

Archuleta was arrested in May after a warrant was issued by a judge. He was later charged with multiple felonies and will go on trial in September.

During Wednesday’s hearing, defense attorney Shannon Demler explained that as part of the plea deal, prosecutors agreed to drop the remaining charges against Ricker. She also agreed to cooperate with prosecutors in their case against Archuleta.

Ricker spoke briefly, telling the court she was guilty and wished to be sentenced immediately. She claimed that she was a different person when the crimes were committed in 1991.

Judge Brian Cannell said what Ricker did was “unfathomable, heinous and disgusting, and should never happen.” He ordered her to serve three-years-to-life in prison, the term running at the same time as her current sentence.

Ricker has already been in prison for 13 years. It will be up to the Utah Board of Pardons and Parole to determine when she may be released.
