USU’s SDL receives a 10-year $1 billion contract

NORTH LOGAN – Utah State University’s Space Dynamics Laboratory (SDL) Thursday announced a contract from the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) valued at up to $1 billion over the next 10 years.

As part of what is described as an indefinite delivery, indefinite quantity contract, SDL will support AFRL and the United States Space Force with several assignments that fall under a specific set of SDL’s core competencies which include small satellite and sensor system technology research.

SDL President Dr. Jed Hancock said the contract represents a vital contribution that will help the United States remain at the forefront of new technologies for space.

“We’re honored to work with AFRL,” said Hancock. “I can’t think of a better way to celebrate our 25th anniversary as a trusted adviser to the government as a UARC (University Affiliated Research Center) than by celebrating this new contract.”

Decades ago SDL was founded on early successes in remote and space-based sensor development and since then has supported NASA’s mission to drive advances in science technology and space exploration.

“This contract involves everything from small satellites to scientific instruments to ground systems and mission operation control centers to help conduct scientific missions to help defend our nation.” said Lance Fife, SDL’s Director of Strategic and Military Space Division.

The Department of Defense established UARCs in 1996 to ensure that essential engineering and technology capabilities are maintained. There are currently 14 Department of Defense UARCs in the U.S.

SDL is a research laboratory in North Logan with offices in nine other locations across the country.
