A decision in February by Governor Spencer Cox to update Utah’s COVID-19 dashboard weekly, instead of daily, led to the third release Thursday of data in the new format. Information is drawn from monitoring wastewater, clinic and ER visits, hospitalizations, and deaths.
This is the implementation of the “steady state” response to the pandemic which was announced two months ago by the Governor.
In recent tests of the state’s 32 municipal wastewater facilities, officials found increasing levels of coronavirus in 19 of them; the Bear River Health Department was not among them.
The latest report from northern Utah (Cache, Box Elder and Rich counties) shows 51,601 total cases, 2,046 hospitalizations and 247 COVID deaths the last 25 months. More than 71 percent of the three-county population has received at lease one dose of vaccine.
The April 21 report from the Utah Department of Health (UDOH) indicated nearly 1,200 new cases statewide in the previous seven days. But this week’s (April 28) report shows 1,695 new cases in one week, an increase of several hundred over the last seven days.
Also seven new COVID deaths were reported this week adding to the total of 4,747 deaths since the start of the pandemic in March, 2020.
UDOH said Utah’s total coronavirus cases surpassed 932,000 this week while hospitalizations now number more than 34,000.
There were 59 COVID hospitalizations the last seven days which includes 10 in intensive care. Coronavirus patients made up less than one percent of emergency room visits the past seven days.
The number of Utahns fully vaccinated is 2,012,715, nearly 62 percent of the state’s population. More than five million total doses of vaccine have now been administered in Utah.
