Talented cast waiting anxiously in the wings for Pickelville season

A talented cast is anxiously waiting in the wings for the 2022 Pickleville Playhouse season to begin. The Davis clan will debut 'New Sheriff in Town' on May 27 and "Beauty and the Beast' at their rustic playhouse on June 21.

GARDEN CITY – With just three weeks to go before their season opens, the Pickleville Playhouse has announced its cast and crew for 2022.

The musical melodrama New Sheriff in Town will open on May 27 and run through Sept. 5. On June 21, the Davis clan will premiere the Disney musical Beauty and the Beast through Aug. 19.

The big news is that one of our favorite actresses, Kensie Davis, will be dividing her time between performing and directing.

Ms. Davis has been a familiar face to Pickleville audiences where she has been performing since she was a little girl. Anytime she was not on stage, she was in the wings cheering her older siblings.

In 2019, she appeared as Ariel in The Little Mermaid and Moxie in the summer melodrama Shootout at Shadow Mountain. Then came her two-year stand as Wednesday in fall productions of The Addams Family.

In recent years, Ms. Davis was Gratilda in the holiday originals Juanito Bandito’s Christmas Carol and Emily/Eve in Once Upon a North Pole Christmas last year.

Besides directing Beauty and the Beast, Ms. Davis will appear as Tina in New Sheriff in Town and as Belle in the Disney musical.

She will perform opposite Nate Kremin as the Beast, who just happens to be her fiancé.

Don’t worry, there has always been nepotism involved in casting these Pickleville shows and it has always worked out fine.

Kremin is a veteran of shows at the Hale Centre Theatre in Salt Lake City and appeared previously on the Pickleville stage as Mister Grimm in Juanito Bandito shows and Lord Farquaad in Shrek the Musical.

As usual, Derek and TJ Davis are collaborating on this summer’s original musical, New Sheriff in Town, as writer/director and composer respectively.

Derek Davis and his wife Whitney Osborne Davis were the backbone of The Addams Family (appearing as Gomez and Morticia in three fall productions of the musical from 2019 to 2021) and also led the Pickleville Workshops for youngsters.

TJ Davis’ previous credits include writing, directing and starring in a decade-and-a-half of shows for his family, including the hilarious Juanito Bandito series.

Unfortunately, the Davises have lost the talents of Slater Ashenhurst and his pal Jordan Todd Brown. For years, they appeared in summer melodramas as criminal mastermind Jacques Javert and his sidekick Bo “Big Guns” Garrett, who were known for going off-book into improv whenever they got tired of the script.

But, as a script advisor, Brown is still keeping his hand in by pitching jokes to Derek Davis from his new home in Brooklyn, N.Y.

Nathan Jones is playing “crazy” old Maurice at Pickleville in Beauty and the Beast. If he looks familiar, that’s because he’s been dividing his time between Four Seasons Theatre Company and Music Theatre West (MTW) productions on this side of Logan Canyon for quite a while.

His credits include Maurice in the recent MTW production of Beauty and the Beast; Mr. Smythe in A Christmas Carol (Four Seasons); Pastor Bruno in Freaky Friday (Four Seasons); Grimsby in The Little Mermaid (Four Seasons); and Brother Gad in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat (MTW).

Other cast members, many of whom are newcomers to the Pickleville stage, include Abby Huff, Adam Morrison, Ally Choe, Abby Yardley, Betsy Sandifer, Cydney Katcipal, Eliza Kay Hall, Ella Jay Matthews, Jake Mickel, Judith Larsen, Logan Kelley, Natalie Stahl, Nathan Jones, Ryan Sammonds, Taylor Seth Hall and Troy Boone.
