MONTPELIER, Idaho — Leaders of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints have announced the location of the Montpelier Idaho Temple. The temple will be built on a 2.6 acre site at the intersection of Washington and Sixth North, east of the Montpelier Tabernacle.
The announced location is where the old Montpelier City Hall previously stood. According to Montpelier, Idaho Stake Communications Directors McKay and Susie Crane, the city needed to move their offices so the land was put up for sale and the building was torn down. Several other nearby houses were torn down or moved.
A press release Friday morning said the future temple will be a two-story structure, about 27,000 square feet in size.
The Montpelier Temple was announced on April 3rd by Church President Russell M. Nelson. In addition to the Montpelier temple, Idaho has eight other temples in operation, under construction or announced in Boise, Burley, Idaho Falls, Meridian, Pocatello, Rexburg (Rexburg Idaho Temple and Rexburg Idaho North Temple) and Twin Falls.
Church leaders report that there are more than 15,000 members in the area. Many of those used to travel to Logan, Utah or Afton, Wyoming to participate in temple services.
Details about the design and when construction will begin have not been released.
This story was updated with details regarding the demolition of Montpelier City Hall.
This City Hall and three homes have already been demolished during the past year. One home was moved – my parents’s.
