Lyric’s Vosco Call Spotlight Concert to be live once again

LOGAN – The theme of the 4th Annual Vosco Call Spotlight Concert on July 19 and 26 will be movie musicals.

“Join us,” invites Richie Call, the artistic director of the Lyric Repertory Company, “as we feature popular, family friendly songs ranging from the Golden Age of Movie Musicals to present-day blockbusters.”

Richie Call explains that the spotlight concert was named in honor of the LRC’s founder and first artistic director, his grandfather Vosco Call.

“The event was created to celebrate our patrons and feature the talents of our company,” Richie Call adds. “We also hope to raise awareness and money for the Lyric Repertory Company Endowment Fund.”

In a sense, the late Vosco Call was also the grandfather of the entire performing arts community here.

A native of Cache Valley, Vosco Call was already an accomplished stage actor when he joined the faculty at Utah State decades ago.

He was one of the founding members of the university’s modern theatre arts program, where he helped to mold multiple generations of future performers.

Vosco Call also played an instrumental role in the acquisition and restoration of the Caine Lyric Theater. In 1967, he founded the Old Lyric Repertory Company and the rest, as they say, is history.

The theater patriarch passed away in 2019 at the age of 91.

In recent years, while the coronavirus pandemic forced the cancellation of stage performances, the Vosco Call Spotlight Concert went on in the form of digital recordings in 2020 and in a blended format combining digital and live performances in 2021.

This year, the 4th Annual Vosco Call Spotlight Concert promises to be alive and kicking.

The 1930s through the early 1950s is considered to be the Golden Age of Movie Musicals in Hollywood, particularly at the studios of the Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Company.

During that period, Hollywood produced such iconic musicals as Singin’ in the Rain, the Wizard of Oz, An American in Paris, Showboat, White Christmas, Guys and Dolls, Seven Brides for Seven Brothers, Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, Oklahoma and South Pacific.

In recent years, more cautious film-makers have produced shows like West Side Story (twice), The Sound of Music, My Fair Lady, Chicago, Rent, In The Heights and Hamilton.

Richie Call isn’t saying whether music from those particular musicals will be featured at the Spotlight Concert, but the Lyric will certainly have the talent lined to perform selections from any of those scores.

The cast of the Spotlight Concert will include Blake Brundy, Kaito Davis, Syndee Fullmer, Grace Garner, Mia Gatherum, Jimmie Haynie, Keaolani Hosino, Christopher Klinger, Lacy J. Dunn, Kat Lee, Kelly McGaw, Carolina Flores Parada, Timo Rassmussen, Carlwell Redman, Preston Rowland, McKenna Walwyn and Daniel Webb.

Most of those performers are currently appearing the Lyric’s ongoing production of Freaky Friday.

The Vosco Call Spotlight Concert will be performed at 7:30 p.m. on July 19 and 26 at the Morgan Theatre in the Chase Fine Arts Center on the campus of Utah State University.
