Festival Opera performers wow crowd at late-night Cabaret

Local favorite actress and singer Lindsey Kelstrom performs at a late-night Cabaret on July 14 at Cafe Sabor.

LOGAN – Members of the Utah Festival Opera & Musical Theatre’s cast let their hair down on July 14 to perform in a classy cabaret show at Café Sabor.

The premiere cabaret of the UFOMT 2022 season was held Thursday on the patio at the popular eatery with a capacity crowd attending.

After the curtain fell on Thursday’s performance of Carmen at the Ellen Eccles Theatre, the cabaret show started at 11 p.m. and ran until about midnight.

Don’t worry. The entertainment will keep you awake, even if you’re not exactly a night owl.

From the traditional end of the musical spectrum, Amber Rose Romero performed an appropriately upbeat rendition of “Cockeyed Optimist” from South Pacific.

Ms. Romero came straight from the Ellen Eccles Theatre, where she performs in the chorus of Carmen.

Like the after-dark performance on Monday night at the Center Street Celebration, many of the performers at Café Sabor were members of the chorus who were eager for a chance to shine in the spotlight, according to Gary Griffin, the managing director of the UFOMT.

That gives you an idea of the kind of depth of talent we have in this season’s cast,” he added.

From the chorus of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat and She Loves Me, Camryn Elias performed a jazzy version of “Lost in the Brass,” from the recent musical Band Geeks.

But show headliners were also queued to perform in the cabaret show.

Fatu Su’esu’e, from the cast of The Magic Flute and She Loves Me, took the stage to perform a tune from the musical Amazing Grace.

Our own Lindsey Kelstrom, from the cast of She Loves Me, brought down the house with “Gimme, Gimme” from Mama Mia!

Savannah Carrosco, one of the winners of the statewide 12th Annual Utah High School Musical Theatre Awards sponsored by UFOMT, also performed.

The audience responded enthusiastically, leading master of ceremonies Jared Rounds to quip: “And she’s only a sophomore, folks.”

Finally, Levi Hopkins delivered one of his trademark interpretations of the Donna Summer disco classic “I Will Survive.” The crowd loved it!

If you missed it, shame on you! But there will be additional opportunities to catch this show – with new music and performers – on July 21 and 28.

Seating for those events is limited, however. Tickets for the Cabaret can be reserved by calling the festival opera ticket office at 435-750-0300.
