Cache Theatre Company turns to teenage performers for ‘Little Mermaid’ reprise

Young Brynlee Downs will play the title role in the Cache Theatre Company's reprise of its 2016 production of the Disney Musical 'The Little Mermaid.'

LOGAN – The Cache Theatre Company’s next production — a reprise of Disney musical The Little Mermaid – will debut on Friday, Aug. 26.

The show will be an all-teen production, featuring young talent from area high schools, according to stage manager Ella Stevens.

The musical is, of course, based on the 1989 Disney animated film of the same name and the classic story by Hans Christian Andersen.

The show ran on Broadway from 2008 to 2009, replacing the stage version of Disney’s Beauty and the Beast. Composer Alan Menken borrowed from his own score for the animated movie and collaborated with lyricist Glenn Slater to add 10 new songs that gave The Little Mermaid’s score elements of 1960s rock, vaudeville and 1920s cabaret music.

This will be the second-go-around for The Little Mermaid from CTC. The company staged the show in 2016 with an adult cast.

This time out, the production is built on the energy and enthusiasm of its teen-aged performers, under the direction of Heather Gleason.

“It’s a very fun show,” according to Ms. Stevens. “The cast is very talented.”

As the star-crossed lovers, young Brynlee Downs will play the mermaid Ariel opposite Zander Papke as Prince Eric.

Aiden Curtis will portray Ariel’s father, King Triton, and Johnny Gilbert will play Sebastian the crab, Triton’s little spy.

James Brooksby and Christian Hosington will appear as Ariel’s pals Scuttle the seagull and Flounder the fish.

Jada Staker will portray the evil Ursula with Etta Nielsen and Tessa Maughan as her henchmen Flotsam and Jetsam.

Eric’s fellow landlubbers will be Micah Coombs as Grimsby and Jonathan Olson as Chef Louis.

Other cast members will include Sadie Humphreys, Elisa Andrews, Charlotte Wells, Haven Draper, Madeline Kleiner, Anna Giddings, Lizzy Piper and Maddy Smith as members of Ariel’s court.

Rounding out the ensemble as seagulls, maids and sailors will be Porter Harris, Kaylee Downs, Shelby Ford, Rachel May, Lynnie Jenson, Madison Lovell, Kaycee Turner, Lainey Parish, Ellee Downs, Adream Vasquez, Jimmie Willis III, Treyson Papke, Scott Johnson, Eric Hale, Trevor Barton, Leo Ramirez, Cami Halling, Hannah Bast, Marilyn Wells, Raegan Christiansen, Lydia Carter and Sydney May.

Evening performances of The Little Mermaid will be staged at 7:30 p.m. on the Ellen Eccles Theatre in downtown Logan on Friday, Aug. 26 and Saturday 27; on Monday, Aug. 29; and on Friday, Sept. 2 and Saturday, Sept. 3.

A matinee performance of the musical is scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 3 at 1:30 p.m.

Ticket for The Little Mermaid can be purchased online from the CacheARTS website at www.cachearts.org or from the Eccles Theatre Box Office at 43 S. Main St. in Logan.
