LOGAN — A 44-year-old Wellsville man has been sentenced to prison for at least 20 years for sexually abusing two girls for years. Steven E. Lambert was given the maximum sentence after a judge furiously said the damage caused to the victims was irreparable.

Lambert was sentenced Monday morning in 1st District Court. He previously accepted a plea deal, pleading guilty to three counts of aggravated sexual abuse of a child, a first-degree felony.

Lambert was arrested in June 2021 after a woman reported being sexually abused by him while she was a teenager. She told Logan City Police officers how he molested and raped her, often nightly, from the time she was 12-years-old until graduating high school.

As the investigation continued, a second victim came forward, explaining how she was also sexually abused by Lambert when she was 8-years-old.

The victims were all acquaintances of Lambert, who was considered to be a person of trust.

During Monday’s sentencing, defense attorney Michael McGinnis asked the court for a lighter prison term, explaining Lambert had no criminal history. He acknowledged though, the facts of the case are very serious and caused harm to the victim.

Lambert apologized briefly, stating he was sorry for what he did.

Cache County Deputy Attorney Griffin Hazard said, “This was probably the worst case of child sex abuse that I’d seen.” He stated that there was no way to describe what the victim went through.

Judge Angela Fonnesbeck said Lambert’s actions were heinous and disgusting in nature. She issued maximum sentences of 10-years-to-life for each of the three charges, with two of the terms to run consecutively. She also angrily said she would recommend the defendant not be given any credit for the year he had already spent in jail.

“Your behavior is truly disgusting,” Judge Fonnesbeck told Lambert. “This is not okay and you are going to prison for it.”
