LOGAN — The Cache Refugee and Immigrant Connection (CRIC) honored a local business owner late last week as the recipient of their first ever Community Champion Award.

On KVNU’s For the People program, CRIC director Danny Beus said that Angie’s Restaurant owner Saboor Sahely was to be recognized during the organization’s annual Harvest Moon Dinner held at the Old Barn in Paradise. He said Saboor is very deserving.

“Not only for the incredible work he does in the community, everybody knows and everybody has a positive story when it comes to Angie’s and Saboor. But Saboor really stepped up to help Afghan refugees resettle here, helping them find housing, helping them with employment, helping them with whatever needs they had, Saboor was there. And, so, it’s incredible and an honor to be able to recognize him,” Beus explained.

Sahely, himself, fled Afghanistan and came to Logan to get his graduate degree from Utah State University 44 years ago.

More recently, the Afghan government fell to the Taliban and tens of thousands evacuated to the United States. Of those, Beus said initially 19 refugees arrived in Cache Valley.

A hundred percent of the Afghans that come to Cache Valley are fully employed and they have great jobs here at local businesses,” Beus added. “They are off of all government support and they have permanent housing. So, it’s pretty cool to see the numbers across the nation are like 68 percent of the Afghans are employed. Cache Valley has really stepped up to help these guys.”

He said now there’s a unique opportunity to help Ukrainians as many have fled the war and are coming to the valley. Beus said many of them are going to sponsor families, so CRIC is not told when a new Ukrainian family arrives.

He wants to let them know that his organization is here to help them with resources, to assist Ukrainian refugees to start over in Cache Valley. Their website is CacheRefugees.org.
