Logan Mayor Holly Daines proclaims ‘Small Business Saturday’ on Nov. 26

Mayor Holly Daines has proclaimed Nov. 26 to be Small Business Saturday in Logan, urging local shoppers to patronize home grown retailers and restaurants on that day.

LOGAN — Logan Mayor Holly Daines has proclaimed Nov. 26 to be Small Business Saturday in Logan.

In a proclamation issued Nov. 1 during the regular meeting of the Logan City Council, Daines urged all Logan residents to support local small businesses and merchants on the Saturday following the Thanksgiving holiday.

The mayor said that the observance is a way for the city to celebrate and support “local small businesses and the contributions they make to our economy and community.”

To honor that observance, 58 percent of American consumers reported that they shopped at an independently-owned retailer on Small Business Saturday in 2021. A nearly equal number – about 54 percent – said that they had dined or ordered take-out from a small restaurant, bar or café on that day.

That support on Small Business Saturday resulted in business amounting to receipts of a record $23.3 billion for small businesses and restaurants, according to the 2021 Small Business Saturday Consumer Insights Survey conducted by American Express.

Small Business Saturday has been observed nationwide since 2010, proudly supported by American Express, Women Impacting Public Policy (a business advocacy group) and a coalition of participating corporate supporters.

The Saturday after Thanksgiving falls, they say, neatly into the strategic shopping gap between the retail madness of Black Friday and the online purchasing surge on Cyber Monday.

There are now 32.5 million small businesses in America, according to the U.S. Small Business Administration.

Those enterprises represent 99.7 percent of U.S. employers and can boast of employing nearly 47 percent of all paid workers.

Moreover, small businesses were responsible for creating 62 percent of new jobs since 1995.

Small shops and stores with 50 or fewer employees make up 98 percent of all U.S. retailers, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

They contribute to their communities by employing nearly 40 percent of all retail workers and reinvesting more of their profits into local economies than big-box chain stores.

Joining Daines in issuing Small Business Saturday proclamations are elected officials in all 50 states; Washington, D.C.; Puerto Rico; and all other U.S. territories.

Daines also urged Logan residents “to shop or eat at small, independently owned businesses all year long, not just during the holiday season.”

Thats great, but driving sucks so bad in Logan anymore, that I go to Tremonton or Brigham City. I am sure that My spending is just a drop in the bucket. However, I know several others like me. I would rather drive to Malad City for BBQ than go to Dickies. The traffic sucks that bad. How about some more high density housing.
