LOGAN – After several weeks of discussion and public comment, the Utah High School Activities Association (UHSAA) has officially adopted regions and classifications for high schools throughout the state of Utah. Of particular note, Region 11 will remain the same through the 2023-25 academic-athletic seasons with Sky View, Green Canyon, Logan, Ridgeline, Bear River and Mountain Crest staying in the 4A classification.

The first consideration of classifications from UHSAA had Logan as the largest school in 3A. But when the organization announced schools’ proposed regions, they kept Logan in Region 11 as a 4A school. Officials for Logan had appealed to the UHSAA Board of Trustees to stay in 3A due to student population and participation in activities. In its first consideration for classifications, UHSAA considered Ogden and Ben Lomond as 4A schools, but Thursday’s announcement keeps Ogden and Ben Lomond in 3A where they have been, while denying Logan’s request to join them.

A public hearing was held on Wednesday, December 14th to receive feedback from districts and schools on the placement of member schools into regions. According to UHSAA, in addition to the hearing, the UHSAA Board of Trustees received numerous emails from the public regarding the realignment of member schools.

“We appreciate the consideration the UHSAA Board of Trustees gave to the feedback that they received from schools and parents,” said Logan School District Superintendent Frank Schofield on Thursday after the announcement. “We look forward to the opportunity to competing in Region 11 with the other Cache Valley high schools and will continue to do all that we can to support our student-athletes as they compete in the gym and on the field!”

Although Region 11 did not change, two of the other new 4A regions did. Region 8 will include Mountain View, Orem, Payson, Provo, Timpanogos and Uintah in all activities except football, but will add Salem Hills and Spanish Fork in football (5A schools in all other activities in Region 7) while losing Orem (who will move up to Region 7 in 5A). Region 10 will now be composed of Cottonwood, Hillcrest, Jordan, Murray, Park City, Stansbury and Tooele. What used to be known as Region 10 in Southern Utah will now be known as Region 9.

Box Elder High School will remain in 5A’s Region 5 with Bonneville, Bountiful, Clearfield, Northridge, Roy, Viewmont and Woods Cross. Rich High School will remain a 1A school in Region 22 with Altamont, Manila, Tabiona, Tintic and Wendover in all activities except football, and will compete in 8-player football with Altamont, Diamond Ranch, Monticello, Monument Valley, St. Joseph, USDB, Water Canyon and Whitehorse.

The Board of Trustees says any school may now apply to a higher classification in a specific sport or activity at the next Board of Trustees meeting on January, 19, 2023.  Once a school is placed in the higher classification, it must remain in the new placement for that specific sport or activity for the duration of the established two-year alignment.
