LOGAN — A 34-year-old Logan man has been sentenced to jail and probation for using social media to share child pornography. Thay B. Paw was originally arrested and booked into the Cache County Jail in December 2021.
Paw was sentenced Tuesday afternoon in 1st District Court. He previously accepted a plea deal, pleading guilty to sexual exploitation of a minor, a second-degree felony; and failing to stop at the command of law enforcement, a third-degree felony.
In 2021, Logan City Police officers received a cybertip from Facebook. The social media company provided details about how they had detected a user account sharing child pornography with other users. The video file was of an Asian female child approximately 5 to 8-years-old.
The Facebook account and IP address were later tracked to Paw’s Logan home. He was arrested at his place of employment.
During questioning, Paw admitted to using the Facebook account to view and share pornography.
During Tuesday’s sentencing, defense attorney Michael McGinnis asked the court not to sentence Paw to anymore jail time. He noted how his client had already served more than six months.
Cache County Deputy Attorney Joshua Nemeth agreed with McGinnis. He said although he wished for a just sentence, Paw had already served “substantial jail time.”
Judge Angela Fonnesbeck ordered Paw serve 190 days in jail, giving credit for the 190 days already served. She also sentenced him to be placed on probation and successfully complete substance abuse treatment. In addition, he was ordered to enroll in a cultural orientation course and an English language class.
Only 190 days! I was expecting years, not months.
They need to make porn a crime. It’s ruined so many people’s relationships, minds and lives. Then when this happens. Mandatory jail time.
You only get that around here if you’re caught with marijuana.
