Warming Center providing shelter from the cold, but needs more volunteers to continue

LOGAN — Earlier this month was the grand opening of the William A. Burnard Warming Center operating at Logan’s St. John’s Episcopal Church on evenings and overnights.

The center provides a resting place from the bitter cold for those with no other place to sleep at night.

Returning to KVNU’s For the People program on Thursday, the granddaughter of the center’s namesake, Nicole Burnard, said many have used the center in the short time they have been open.

“We’ve been open since December 9th. I do have to say, we have literally been open every night since December 9th. And so, we have had some dedicated, wonderful volunteers who have helped us stay open especially through this last weekend where it was just freezing temperatures,” she explained.

The center can literally be life-saving, but Burnard said in order to continue operations they need more volunteers.

We are in need of additional volunteers, just even to get us through the holidays and just moving forward to January. It just helps us know that we have days staffed. Part of the requirement for us to make sure everything is safe and good for folks, is that we have two volunteers on-site during operating hours providing that friendly supervision.”

She said if they don’t have that, they won’t be able to continue operations because they prioritize safety.

“It is a pretty big commitment, we have things broken down into shifts. The most difficult shift to cover is, of course, that overnight shift from like midnight to 5:45 a.m.,” she added. “What we are doing, too, is allowing folks to split that up if needed.”

Burnard said over the last two weeks, they have been able to help almost 20 people, including two families, specifically, each with small children.

Over the last weekend, when it was very cold, the most they had at one time was about 10 people on one night. She said they even had a pet, a dog, that they were able to provide shelter for.

According to their website, wabwarmingcenter.org, the center will utilize two locations: December & January at St. Johns Episcopal Church at 85 E. 100 N. in Logan and February & March at Cache Valley Veterans Association, 1760 N. 200 E. Unit 100 in North Logan.
