Logan man in jail after allegedly driving under the influence and sexually assaulting sheriff’s deputy

LOGAN — A 27-year-old Logan man was arrested Wednesday after allegedly driving under the influence and then sexually assaulting one of the responding deputies, according to law enforcement. Darien Aztec Salas was booked into the Cache County Jail, following a single vehicle crash in Benson.

According to a probable cause statement, a Cache County Sheriff’s deputy responded to a single-vehicle crash at 2658 West 3400 North. Upon arrival, she discovered the vehicle had driven off of the road and into a ditch.

The driver, identified as Salas, had a strong odor of alcohol coming from his person. He failed a field sobriety test and a breathalyzer test later showed he had an alcohol level of 0.283.

Salas claimed that he had not been drinking but was texting and driving when the crash occurred. He showed the deputy a text message on his phone that was sent about same time as the crash, according to the affidavit.

After being transported to the hospital for medical care, Salas was taken to jail. As the deputy was completing paperwork, she reported Salas “reached up with his foot and caressed her buttocks.” He also “attempted to touch her buttocks with his hand,” as he was being taken into the booking area.

Jail records show, Salas was booked on suspicion of committing forcible sexual abuse, a second-degree felony; assault by a prisoner, a third-degree felony; driving under the influence, a class B misdemeanor; and using a cellphone while operating a vehicle, a class C misdemeanor.

Court records show, Salas recently pleaded guilty to possessing a firearm by a restricted person, a third-degree felony. He was scheduled to sentenced Jan. 18.

Salas is being held in jail without bail, pending arraignment in 1st District Court on the new charges. He could face up to 15 years in prison, if convicted.

Individuals arrested and charged in complaints are presumed innocent unless or until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in court.

Not sure how someone whose hands are cuffed behind their back can reach to touch an officer’s ass?? Sounds like this officer isn’t being honest.
