Just how many miles of trails exist in Logan

LOGAN — A KVNU listener recently asked about the trails system, especially around Logan city.  She expressed that she has never had to repeat walking a trail unless she chose to, saying there must be miles of trails and that people should know about them.

On KVNU’s For the People program on Wednesday, Logan Parks and Recreation Director Russ Akina told us just how many miles there are.

There’s 32 miles of trail and there’s actually another ten miles of connecting sidewalk to a trailhead,” Akina said.

With Logan continuing to grow and expand, it would seem that the city has had to get creative in protecting the trail system.

“One of the things for us that we look at in terms of the city’s trail network, is the idea to connect parks with trails. In terms of having to be creative, sometimes it’s also a matter of being patient, a lot of these things that the public can enjoy now partly comes because of resources made available.”

Akina said when it comes to trails, the city has been blessed with the county RAPZ tax program because that has been one of their main resources for trail construction and development.

“We also have some state grants that have been instrumental in helping us to move things along. But it does take time and when it does involve private property, we’re in different levels of contact and communication with private property owners in terms of knowing how they feel about it and where there’s something like a public trail could take place, but it’s now always the case.”

If you want to see where the trails are located in Logan, you can download the map and also the brochure at the city website – loganutah.org  (under parks and recreation).

Trails are good but expensive to maintain. Why did we quit funding the Zoo?

This is one of the great things I love about living here. I appreciate the forethought a few years ago for the city to move around some money between departments to provide a lot of the funding to put in a bunch of the trails that they have been able to finish off in order to connect various parks and trails to each other. A great example is the canyon connector that put in a sidewalk right at the mouth of Logan Canyon, to make it easy to get from USU and the Hillcrest neighborhood down to First Dam, the Hydro Park, the River Trail, the Highline Trail, and the Bonneville Shoreline Trail. Adding in the sidewalk makes it much safer to get to the intersection of all those other outdoor resources with a sidewalk instead of having to walk on the highway.
