NORTH LOGAN – North Logan City Mayor Lyndsay Peterson was recently a guest on KVNU’s For the People program with Jason Williams and Bill Walter talking about the plans her city and other municipalities are making for a county wide garbage pickup.

Peterson said Logan City sent out a letter to all the municipalities saying they are opting out of the county-wide waste pickup.

About a year ago Logan City told the cities in the county they wanted to change some of the services they were offering.

Williams said it sounded like many services were becoming more of a burden for Logan City with all the growth that is taking place. Many of the services they have been offering to other municipalities were becoming hard to sustain.

Logan is trying to keep up with and maintain their current services with a subdivisions growing in and outside of the city.

“Initially, they sent a letter and gave us three years to figure out garbage pickup on your own,” Peterson said. “There has been a lot happen within the last year. It has been good to get to know all of the other mayors.”

She speaks on the phone with other jurisdictions daily.

“We formed Cache Waste Consortium,” she explained, “which is a legal entity that will replace the service district that previously oversaw garbage hauling.”

At the time, Peterson was newly-elected, went to work and got with other cities and organized a legal consortium with 14 other cities in Cache County.

They have interviewed four potential waste management companies and have narrowed it down to one.

“We are in negotiations with Waste Management Services,” she said. “We are aiming for a countywide program by September 1, 2023.”

Waste Management is not new to Utah. They already have many services available to residents. They claim to be Utah’s largest trash and recycling services.

“There are a lot of things to hammer out; we are getting close,” she said. “I think the starting point was to form the Cache Waste Consortium that would handle the trash hauling.”

The cities had to have a legal entity to handle the garbage services. Four cities separated from the original consortium and went in a different direction.

She is optimistic about how it will all work out.

“Getting 15 cities on the same page has taken a lot of meetings, and getting lawyers to agree has been a challenge,” the mayor said. “That was the first step and then giving the proposals to the haulers and hammering out the details.”

With her legal background she has been able to work a lot of the requirements needed for all of the cities to agree on the garbage proposal.

“It’s been really interesting and heartening to see how communities can work together. It is really good for me as a new mayor, too. It’s been a really good way for me to learn about being mayor.”

Peterson wants the transition from Logan City to the consortium to be as seamless as possible so patrons will not even notice their trash is being hauled by a different entity.
