Salvador Abonal Parco

January 3, 1934 – March 25, 2023 (age 89)

Salvador Abonal Parco completed his earthly life on March 25,2023 at the age of 89 in Logan Utah. He was born in San Nichols, Nabua, Camarines sur Providence, Philllipinnes on January 3, 1934. To Eulogia Almazan Parco and Anacleta Dorozan Abonal.

Salvador excelled as a student. He graduated from Ateneo de Naga University in 1955 with a Bachelor of Arts in English and Science. In 1963 He finished a Masters degree at Cornell University in New York in Organizational Methods and Community Development. In 1973 at Pennsylvania State University he obtained a PHD in Rural Sociology.

His work; Salvador used all of his education to teach others, and was actively employed until the age of 80. In the Phillippines he started as a Community Development Instructor and training Officer. He taught Rural Sociology at University of the Phillippines Los Banos. He was on the faculty as ans Assistant Professor at Ateneo de Manilla teaching Behavioral Science and as Chairman of the Graduate Department. He also conducted research fot the Institute of the Phillippine Culture, Edited the Phillippine Scociological Review and Chaired an annual conference of the Phillippines Sociological Society. One summer in the 1960’s he spent living in Afganistan, sent by the Phillippines Government, training the people in Community Development and lived among the people. After he toured all over Europe, he returned to the United States and where he made a report at the Pentagon. By chance he joined the March with Martin Luther King. He was up front and close, locking hands with the throngs of people singing We Shall Overcome. It was believed he was the last remaining person in Erie PA who had been at the march that day.

In America after finishing at Penn State and bringing his family with 4 children to live in the United States in 1970. Salvador started his career as a Professor at the Behrend College of Pennsyvania State in Erie, Pa. He also taught classes Gannon University, Villa Maria, Thiel College, and Mercyhurst North East. Other employment opportunities included work in the blue collar sector at General Electric(training) and American Sterilizer Company. He also worked in the financial field at Mutual of Omaha, Prudential, Waddell and Reed, and Forth Financial Network. His favorite opportunity was as a legal Rights Educator for Northwest Legal Services speaking all over the region. He finished his career at Greater Erie Community Action Committee helping people learn financial literacy.

He served the community at various organizations in Erie as an officer and board member of the International Institute of Erie, Filipino American Association of Northwestern Pennsylvania, Family Living Advisory Council of the Erie County Cooperative Extension Service, Citizens Against Racism in Erie, Erie Neighborhood Watch Council, Voices for Independence, Retired Senior Volunteer Program Advisory Council, Erie County Drug and Alchol Executive Commision, Independent Council on Aging, Alzheimer’s Association of Northwestern Pennsylvania, Lakeshore Community Services, Erie County Coalition of Mental Health Consumers, and Forrester’s Harbor and Erie City Zoning Hearing Board. He was also heavily involved with the activities of We Love Erie Days, United Way, Glenwood Manor Association, Erie County Coslition of Persons with Disabilitiea, Northwest Tri-County Right to Education task force, Community Support Program in Erie County, Erie CHIP (Childrens Health Insurance Program)Coalition, and NAMI. Plus he is the founder of Filipino American Association of Northwest Pennsylvania.

He was a convert and faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints since 1973. He held Various callings within the church including Leadership, Teaching, Ministering, and Musical, in the Erie Second Ward, and the Jamestown NY Stake. In 2011 he and his wife Linda served as Ordinance Workers in the Palmyra New York Temple. Serving every other Saturday for threes years. In 2014 He and Linda served a 13 month Church Service Mission in the Jamestown NY Stake of the Pittsburg Pennsyvania Mission of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.

He was talented in playing musical instruments from the age of 5 yrs old. Trained by his father on the Clairinet, the Guitar, and the Violin. Which he played until the age of 88.

Salvador is survived by his wife Linda Jean Durrant Parco, 5 Children, Laura Koontz(Jan), Farol Parco(Mylene), Maria Evans(Mark), Salvador Parco Jr.(Cindy), William Parco(Mischa),and 2 stepchildren, Ruth(Terry), Robert(Nicole). Four sisters, Terisita Decrepito, Emily Alianza, Gnelly Sto Thomas, Lety Caroche, one sister in law, Corsee Parco. 21 Grandchildren, and 31 great grandchildren.

Preceeded in death by his parents, a sister Maria Claudia, two brothers Juan Parco and Jose Parco. Now united in Eternity with his wife Alicia Tan Uy Parco and his granddaughter Marissa Parco.

Services will be Saturday April 8, 2023 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints Ballard Creek Ward Chapel 350 West 700 South, Logan Utah.

A 10:00AM Viewing and 11:00AM Funeral Service.

Services in Erie Pennsylvania on April 12, 2023 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, Erie Wards Chapel, 1101 S. Hill Rd.

A 10:00AM Reception and 11:00AM Funeral Service.

Final resting place and Interment at Wintergreen Gorge Cemetery.

Funeral services are under the direction of Allen-Hall Mortuary.
