Locals can help refugees in Utah and abroad

LOGAN – Lifting Hands International (LHI), a nonprofit organization based in Utah, is supporting refugees both locally and internationally. With its humanitarian hub located in American Fork and donation spots spread across Utah, including Logan, LHI remains dedicated to providing crucial assistance to refugees in need.

Recently, LHI dispatched a shipment of hygiene kits, shirts, and underwear to ‘Team Brownsville’ in Texas, situated at the border. Additional shipments are scheduled for Ukraine and Jordan this week, highlighting the organization’s commitment to adapt swiftly to changing world circumstances and customize their aid and shipments to meet the specific needs of refugees.

LHI has been on the front lines of humanitarian efforts due to ongoing Russian aggression in Ukraine, deadly global natural disasters, and the increasing flow of migrants seeking shelter in the United States. These global crises have led to an unprecedented number of displaced individuals and families, intensifying the need for humanitarian aid, especially for refugees from war-torn countries like Ukraine, Syria, and Afghanistan, as well as victims of earthquakes in Turkey and Syria, and legal asylum seekers in U.S. border shelters. Many refugees arrive with nothing more than the clothes on their backs, and families are often separated, making LHI a crucial lifeline in alleviating their suffering and meeting their basic needs.

LHI’s Welcome Program aims to equip incoming refugee families and individuals in Utah with essential home goods, including bedding, kitchen supplies, bathroom essentials, cleaning items, and food. In response to the growing demand, LHI has successfully partnered with local resettlement agencies, such as the International Rescue Committee (IRC) and Catholic Community Services (CCS), to set up hundreds of apartments for refugee families. By extending a helping hand, the people of Utah can make an immense impact on the lives of refugees facing unimaginable challenges.

LHI encourages individuals, groups, businesses, and organizations to join their cause by donating essential items, creating kits or blankets, assisting with apartment setups, or making financial contributions. A comprehensive list of urgently needed items and instructions on how to donate can be found on LHI’s website at https://lhi.org/needs-list. In Cache Valley, donations can be dropped off at Auric, located at 95 W 100 S, Suite 310, in Logan, Monday through Friday between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m.

Lifting Hands International continues to provide hope and essential support to refugees, reminding us of the power of compassion and the importance of rallying together to aid those in need during times of crisis.
